Ask the Coordinators- Winter photos

Alyssa J. asks: “I’m getting married in the winter, what are some of the best photo spots during the winter months?”

Sarah Hagen | Michael Murphy IV PhotographySarah says: “Winter weddings are beautiful, but the weather can make photo planning more of a challenge than in the warmer months. You could have a calm, dry winter day where you are prepared to brace the cold temperatures to get some outdoor photos in the snow. You could also have a stormy day, where you will want to make use of any indoor spaces available to stay comfortable. We’ve got both covered here at the Castle!

“Winter’s snow can make for some amazingly beautiful wedding photos, so if you’re planning a winter wedding, we encourage you to be willing to venture outside if it is a calm winter day. We clear our main pathways of snow and ice so that wedding parties and photographers can still make use of some of the great photo opportunities the Castle grounds provide. To plan ahead, have your photographer contact us and we can send them a site map showing which paths will be cleared of snow. There are also a few areas outside that are covered, such as the arches in the Queen’s Courtyard, which make for great winter weather photo locations.

“If your wedding falls on a not-so-pleasant winter’s day, or if you want everyone to stay indoors, there are a few options on site that work well for photographs. We highly recommend making use of your ceremony area, especially for family photos. Not only will it keep everyone comfortable, it makes the photo process go much quicker if the large groups of family members do not have to find a new location. Plus, the ceremony areas are so pretty! These areas also provide different backdrops with a little repositioning.  The Queen’s Tavern can be used for its round tower and large windows, or for a solid stone wall with warm lighting. The King’s Gallery can have a curtain backdrop from the ceremony alter, or sections of stone walls to line up in front of. The King’s Indoor Chapel has a tall cathedral window for dramatic ceremony photos as well as stone walls and ceiling beams for a change of scenery. Check with your coordinator for availability on your wedding day, as these spaces may be able to be utilized even if you do not have your ceremony reserved there.

“For a winter wedding at Castle Farms, you do not have to worry about being left without options for your wedding photographs!”
